Christ Lutheran Church Celebrates 50th Anniversary

Christ Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Quincy will celebrate its 50th Anniversary with 10:30am worship, dinner and a special program on Sunday, October 17th.

The fifty-year history of Christ Lutheran Church began with its establishment as a mission church of the Luther Memorial Church congregation. Sixty-five members of Luther Memorial transferred to the new congregation. Christ Lutheran’s first worship service was held at Chaddock Boys School Chapel on September 11, 1960. The congregation installed their first pastor, the Rev. Robert Lee Hauss on December 10, 1961.

In 1962 the congregation purchased property at South 36th and Holiday Drive. The members of Christ Lutheran held their first worship service in their new sanctuary on Sunday, March 7, 1965. The President of the Illinois Synod, Dr. Robert Marshall, dedicated the facility on April 11, 1965.

A major expansion and renovation took place in 2002 under the guidance of the Rev. Dr. Paul Schwartzkopf. Pastor Schwartzkopf recently retired after serving the congregation at Christ Lutheran for 10 years. The congregation currently has over 300 members and is in the process of calling a new pastor. The Rev. Paul Balaban is serving as interim pastor.
During its 50 year history, members of Christ Lutheran Church have been fulfilling their mission of “Christ Cares, Share the Faith” through worship, fellowship, and service to the community and the world.

The anniversary dinner will be held in the fellowship hall immediately following worship on October 17th and will provide an opportunity for former and current pastors, members, and friends to celebrate the years of blessings they have received together at Christ Lutheran.

Christ Lutheran Church is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. The ELCA is a community of faith that shares a passion for making positive changes in the world. Our faith is built around a strong belief in God as made known to us in Jesus Christ. Through worship, service, and education, we practice our faith, grow our relationship with God and experience God's grace in our lives. The ELCA has more than 10,300 congregations across the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, with total membership in excess of 4.5 million.
